Application Of Dual Wall Heat Shrink Tubing in RF Coaxial Connector Cable Assembly

Time:2026/2/7 posted:Kehong Enterprises Co.,Ltd.

I. Core Functions and Benefits

Dual wall Heat Shrinable tubing consists of two layers: an outer layer of radiation-crosslinked polyolefin for mechanical protection, and an inner layer of hot-melt adhesive. Upon heating, the outer layer shrinks to form a tight seal, while the inner layer melts and flows, delivering the following key benefits:

Environmental Sealing and Protection

Water and Moisture Resistance:Provides a complete seal at the interface between the connector and cable, preventing ingress of water and moisture. This is critical for outdoor base stations, marine equipment, and other applications where oxidation or electrochemical corrosion must be avoided.

Contaminant Protection:Shields against dust, salt spray, chemicals, and other contaminants, ensuring long-term stability in harsh industrial environments.

Strain Relief:Offers flexible support at cable bend points, reducing mechanical stress on the critical connection area and preventing cable damage or performance degradation from repeated flexing.

Mechanical Reinforcement

Enhanced Pull-Out Strength:Bonds the connector ferrule, cable braid, and jacket into a single, robust unit, dramatically improving resistance to tensile and torsional forces, and preventing accidental cable disconnection.

Finished Appearance and Physical Protection:Provides a smooth, professional finish and protects underlying metal components from physical impact or abrasion.

Electrical Performance Stability

Impedance Stabilization:Secures and stabilizes the internal geometry through uniform, tight encapsulation, helping to maintain impedance continuity near the connection point and minimize signal reflection.

Insulation and Short-Circuit Prevention:Adds an extra layer of insulation over the outer conductor and ferrule, preventing accidental contact with other metal components.

II. Standard Application Process

Preparation:After completing the connector crimping (center pin, dielectric, and outer conductor) and electrical testing (e.g., VSWR test), slide a suitably sized dual-wall tube over the assembly. The tube length should sufficiently cover the area from the connector backshell to the cable jacket.

Heat Application:Apply even heat using a hot air gun or dedicated heat shrink oven, working from the center toward the ends. Key visual indicators:

The outer sleeve begins to shrink and conform tightly.

The inner adhesive melts and is extruded from both ends, forming smooth, uniform sealing beads. This is the primary visual confirmation of a successful seal.

Inspection:After cooling, inspect for a complete seal, a smooth finish, and ensure there are no air bubbles or unshrunk areas.

III. Selection Criteria

Size:Pre-shrink inner diameter must be larger than the widest part of the connector backshell; recovered diameter should be smaller than the cable jacket outer diameter to ensure a tight fit.

Shrink Ratio:Typically 3:1 or 4:1. A higher ratio accommodates greater diameter variance.

Material & Certifications:Select based on operating temperature range (e.g., -55°C to +125°C) and need for flame retardancy (e.g., compliant with UL VW-1). Military or aerospace applications may require specific standards like MIL-I-23053.

Color:Standard black is common. Custom colors are available for coding purposes (e.g., differentiating frequency bands or functions).
